Home Hybrid Jeet Kune Do Tommy Carruthers – A Jeet Kune Do Legend

Tommy Carruthers is often cited as being the equal of Bruce Lee, and as blasphemous as that may sound to the many admirers of the late Lee it’s a comparison that might in fact have some basis in reality, at least as far as certain elements of his Jeet Kune Do techniques indicate. He certainly has the speed – that isn’t in question at all:

His speed is also highlighted in this clip, which puts it in a more application-based context:

Carruthers has over 30 years experience in the martial arts which includes training in military self-defence techniques (taught him by his father), Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Karate, boxing, Ving Tsun (four years with Nino Bernardo’s clan), Non-Classical Gung Fu and finally Jeet Kune Do.

Oddly enough for a man who is compared to Bruce Lee, Carruthers had never even heard of him until the legend passed away in 1973 when Carruthers was about 14 years old. He and his friends began to watch all of the Bruce Lee movies repeatedly, and that’s when he started “trying it out on (his friends) to see if we could pull it off”.

Among the teachers he credits for developing and refining his skills are such names as Jesse Glover (Bruce Lee’s first student), Ted Wong (another of Lee’s early students), Howard Williams, Gary Dill and many others. Carruthers manages to combine his own hard-trained skills with these teachings to produce something quite unique in the Jeet Kune Do world:
